EP - June 2003

June-03

Q: Dear Paul,

I appreciate all that you are doing.
I am 26 and have been stuck in the cycle of self gratification for as long as I can remember. I truly desire to be pure of heart, but I somehow keep giving into lust. I have resolved to stay close to the sacraments and prayer (although there is still plenty of room for improvement).
I am entertaining the idea of Sexaholics Anonymous (SA), but I am a little concerned about what to expect, or for that matter if it is God's will for me to be part of SA; possibly there would be a better means of getting help. I say this because although I am sure many Catholics and non-Catholic Christians attend SA meetings, the program is not fundamentally Catholic (or Christian for that matter).

Could you explain the Churches position on SA, and a heads-up of what to expect? I am guessing you are Catholic, I apologize if I am incorrect.
God Bless,

A: Dear EP,

I am not aware of any “official” endorsement of SA by the Catholic Church, though I do know that priests refer people to SA when counseling individuals for sexual addiction.

Having attended SA meetings myself, I can state that they are an excellent God-focused organization, even though they strive to avoid any flavor of denominationalism.  They do this in order to keep anyone from feeling shut out, excluded or alienated from the group or their program.

For anyone seeking help from this addiction, including Catholics, I recommend:

Step 1) Attend an SA meeting and obtain a copy of the “White Book”
Step 2) Read the White Book and begin working the 12-step program.
Step 3) Keep attending the SA meetings – both strength and grace can be  found here.
Step 4) Pray, Pray, Pray – then, pray some more.

A regimented program such as the one that SA provides and which also includes group support is both necessary and intrinsic to recovery for any individual seeking to break their sexual addiction.

The primary reason that I started this web site is to offer something that is both spiritually supplemental and Catholic to individuals participating in these programs of recovery.
Breaking these addictions is something that no individual can do on his or her own.
God must be given the role of key player and participant before we can begin to realize any progress toward recovery.
For Catholics, our program must also, by necessity, include frequent Confession and reception of Holy Communion!
The sacraments available to us as Catholics heap an abundance of God’s graces on our own feeble efforts as we strive toward recovery and healing.

Lastly, always look at the crucified Christ before entertaining lustful thoughts.
His wounds were caused by our sins.
Let us endeavor to wound Him no more.

As our Lord said to His apostles after they had failed to cast out a certain demon, “This kind of demon can only be cast out by prayer and fasting.”
The sexually addicted are tormented by these very kinds of demons.

Therefore, working the 12 steps in combination with personal perseverance in prayer,  fasting and living a sacramental Catholic life are paramount to any successful recovery.

I hope and pray that this helps.

God Bless!

P.S. – Yes, I am Catholic.
