A big part of
the problem with sexual addiction is the desire to be in
control.
A necessary component for breaking the cycle of addiction,
therefore, must include surrender of that control. Only when
we begin to develop the habit of surrendering our desire to
lust, our right to lust and our attitudes of lust, do we start
to see real progress.
Physical effort alone inevitably results in repeated failure.
What is it that I must surrender?
Examine your life and look for telltale signs of your (albeit
subconscious) desire to control. This desire will manifest
itself in our relationships with people at all levels – work,
home, school, recreation and leisure activities, even in
church.
This same desire can manifest itself, too, when we are alone.
Examine how you drive, for example. Do you get frustrated
easily while driving? Frustration is a characteristic of the
controlling personality.
Surrender – Can I realistically do anything about the traffic
on the road? No. So give it up! – Surrender. You will
arrive at your destination eventually. Know, too, that God
tests us by placing difficulties in our lives to see how we
will respond. Do I approach difficulties with patience and
the resolve that this situation won’t get the better of me?
Or, more commonly, do I fly off in a fit of anger, blaming
everything and everyone I can because things aren’t going my
way? These are telltale signs of our obsession with being in
control.
Let it go. As we say, “LET GO AND LET GOD!”
Recognizing a “controlling” situation that, on the surface,
seemingly has little or nothing to do with lust and its
addiction, will play a pivotal role in helping you break the
cycle.
When you are confronted with a frustration brought about by a
situation that is outside of our control (e.g., traffic), let
it go and focus on the will of God. Give the sacrifice of
your surrender to God as a penance for past sins.
Once we recognize these “control triggers”, the faster we can
begin to diffuse them, thus diffusing and “surrendering”
ourselves, in every circumstance, to God’s will instead of our
own.
Lastly and most important of all, NEVER GIVE UP! No matter if
you fail and fall time after time, know that God is with you
and supporting you. Keep trying, keep working and give it
your best shot under every circumstance.
Know that all of you are included in our daily rosaries and
family prayers.
May God mercifully bless and sustain you all!
